Physical Therapy

Ms. Christine Mahoney - Leicester Middle School Physical Therapist

Ms. Mahoney provides support for students with disabilities that interfere with their performance and ability to benefit from their educational program. The Physical Therapist (PT) actively participates in the IEP/504 process, including collaboratively determining the need for physical therapy as a related service. When the PT identifies physical therapy as a needed resource, she acts as a member of a multidisciplinary school team charged with meeting the needs of that student.

Using her unique ability in movement and function, Ms. Mahoney is able to prepare students with disabilities for further education, employment, and independent living. The PT promotes motor development and participation in everyday routines and activities that are part of the student’s program and designs and performs therapeutic interventions as needed. The PT consults with and trains family members in such areas as safe lifting, positioning, assisted ambulation, gross motor skills, and equipment usage. The PT helps families interpret assessments, makes recommendations and helps set realistic expectations for the student’s performance in school. The PT provides in-service training to school staff when necessary in regards to safe lifting, positioning, assisted ambulation, gross motor skills, and equipment usage.
