Leicester Middle School named a 2018 NELMS Spotlight School!

(Press Release from the New England League of Middle Schools)

The New England League of Middle Schools announced today that Leicester Middle School was one of two schools recognized by the regional organization this year to receive this prestigious award. According to Kathleen Hill, NELMS Spotlight Schools Coordinator, “The school was selected because of its ability to create an excellent learning environment for young adolescents and its consistent observance of middle school best practices.

Criteria for the award included a review of curriculum and instruction, qualified middle-level teachers, teaming practices, professional development, democratic governance, leadership, appropriate school environment and the level of involvement of parents and community. NELMS reviewers were very impressed with the excellence that was evident during the visit. Permeating the culture and the environment of the school is the deep concern for and understanding of the young adolescents they serve.

The Spotlight Schools award and designation will be in place for three years. The school will be presented with a Spotlight Schools banner at NELMS’ Annual Conference, April 4-5, 2018 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Leicester Middle School is one of only eight Spotlight Schools in Massachusetts to be so designated by NELMS.

Confirmation Letter

The award letter that came from NELMS commended LMS on the following:

  • LMS is a community of caring. Their vision of kindness, achievement, responsibility, and respect are clearly recognizable throughout the school day.
  • The STEM program allows all students to experience STEM classes during at least one trimester each year. LMS is only one of two schools in the state to provide STEM in this format.
  • The implementation of a library/media program and the hiring of a specialist have established the library as a hub of learning.
  • LHS has a strong middle school schedule that includes daily common planning time by department, an 8-period by 8-day rotation that emphasizes double blocks of ELA and mathematics each day.
  • A vibrant community relationship exists that include a supportive parent body and service learning opportunities with the senior center, food pantry, and other local organizations.
  • Student achievement and growth is a priority as evidenced by progress monitoring and tiered intervention with sub-separate specialists in reading and mathematics.

NELMS encouraged LMS to maintain a strong focus on middle school philosophy and best practices, especially staff development, programming, materials, and scheduling.
