Physical Therapy

Brian Duval, Physical Therapist for Leicester Public Schools
As the
school’s physical therapist (PT), Mr. Duval, works collaboratively with students who have physical limitations, their families, and educational teams to help the students gain the highest degree of physical access to the curriculum. This physical access to the curriculum is holistic in nature and takes all aspects of the student’s school day into consideration. PT services could involve direct motor learning skills, such as walking with increased efficiency to navigate through the school environment; recommending physical adaptations and accommodations to the student’s environment like supported chairs; and developing therapeutic activities and exercises. Such exercises may include balance activities on a physio-ball to help improve a students ability to reach for objects on the floor. PT services will include continued consultations about the student’s physical progress with all team members. Consultations may include safety training that is done collaboratively with all staff working with the individual student. It is essential for all staff that have not been trained or do not feel proficient working with the student, to consult with the PT prior to providing services to students. This work will always be provided in the least restrictive environment and preferably the student’s natural environment whenever possible.
